Picking Candy for a Birthday Party

Let’s be honest. Birthday parties can be quite the struggle, or at least for the planner it can be. The amount of responsibility that comes with being a party planner is immense, and at times, can be overwhelming. The checklist never seems to end. Do you have plates and silverware? Ok, what about food and drinks – you have to have food and drinks. Check and check. Balloons? You have that, too?

And although there are some areas on the list that are less important than others and can be left off, there are a few that are pivotal to a party’s design. So pivotal, in fact, that if not done right the party could pretty much fall apart right then and there. One of them, of course, is decorations. The other, though? Candy.

Although candy isn’t that common at adult parties, you better believe it’s the highlight of everybody’s life at kids parties. That’s why you have to make sure that the candy you stock up on is the right kind – inclusive of everyone’s tastes and preferences and nothing too bland. For example, if you were a kid and had just broken open a piñata and saw a bunch of black licorice fall out, how would you feel? Petrified, of course. You’d instead want to see something along the lines of Hershey’s chocolate, Skittles, or Starbursts.

And while the idea of deciding which candy to choose may seem daunting, know that it isn’t. Below, we’ve listed a few tips and candy party favor ideas to help you get started on your decision-making process.

Candy Party Favor Ideas & Tips

First and foremost, the most important thing you’ll want to remember is to make sure that your candy has a lot of variety – kind of like a buffet. Not only is it visually appealing to see tons of different types of candy, but by having a large variety of candy, you’ll increase the chances of everyone leaving happy (as again, different people have different preferences). So, whether you’re picking out candy to stuff a piñata with, or you’re trying to build candy party favor bags, know that the more, the merrier.

When picking candy for a birthday party, we recommend dividing your selections into four sections: chocolate, lollipops, hard candy, and gummies. These sections are further outlined below. And note, you’ll want to feel out everyone’s preferences here. If you believe that healthy snacks are the preferred choice for some, then this should also be considered.

  • Chocolate: When picking out chocolate, go crazy. Although dark chocolate is not typically well-liked by youngsters, you’ll want to grab a bunch of different things here. Look for popular brands and choices, such as 3 Musketeers, Reese’s, and Twix.
  • Lollipops: Lollipops are great because there are tons of flavors and brands to choose from. We recommend Jolly Rancher Lollipops, and Dum Dums Lollipops. Oh, and Tootsie Pops, too!
  • Gummies: Soft and fun to chew, gummies are packed full of flavor – whether it be sour or sweet. Not only should you stock up on Sour Patch Kids, but you should also look into grabbing Airheads, Laffy Taffy, and Haribo Gold-Bears.
