DIY Mask Making

Although parts of the world, including the U.S., are finding a sense of normalcy again, mask restrictions in certain areas – and under certain circumstances – are still frequently enforced. It’s hard to tell when we’ll get back to the way of living as before (pre-2020), but in the meantime, it’s best to stay prepared.

Disposable face masks seem to be the most popular mask option and are very easy to purchase. However, to some, it can become costly since you frequently need to buy new ones. As an alternative, many people purchase fabric face masks as they can be washed and re-used continuously. Fabric masks have also become very popular in the fashion industry. Before COVID, face masks were very rarely used outside of healthcare, construction, and other professional settings. They had one or two looks, that’s it. Now, face masks come in all sorts of shapes, colors, and designs. You can match them with your outfit, your purse, or whatever your personality is for that day. They’ve become an extension of oneself, another way to express individuality and style.

However, depending on what you have lying around at home, you don’t have to purchase a face mask – you can make one! Although the level of difficulty varies, creating a homemade mask is very fun and will allow you to save a few extra dollars.

How to Make an Easy Face Mask

Learning how to make an easy face mask is, well, pretty easy. Although there are many ways to make one, with some ways being more complex than others, the way we’re about to show is fairly simple and easy to grasp. It only requires a few materials and shouldn’t take too long to make, unlike other methods that require sewing. To learn how you can create and style your own DIY fabric mask, continue reading below!

1. Create the Mask

Now there are many ways to create your own face mask. In this DIY mask making tutorial, though, we will be showing you how to create a face mask from a t-shirt. This can be an old t-shirt, or it can be something of a similar material. What you will want to make sure, though, is that the fabric Feel free to choose a fabric that is plain or heavily designed. This is your DIY fabric mask so get creative here. In addition to the shirt, you’re going to need a pair of scissors and a ruler – to measure the cuts.

Once you have everything you need, lay out your t-shirt on a flat surface. Cut the bottom part of your t-shirt off. Here, you’ll end up with a rectangular piece of fabric. Ideally, you’ll want the fabric height to be between 7-8 inches, which is approximately the length of your nose to your chin. However, if needed, feel free to cut a little more and trim later on for excess.

After cutting out the bottom portion of your t-shirt, you can throw away or discard the rest of your shirt – you’ll only need the bottom portion moving forward. Lay the rectangular piece of fabric on a flat surface. Cut into the t-shirt (around 6-7 inches) on both sides, cutting out the remaining material. Basically, you’ll want to be cutting C-shapes into the fabric. What you’ll be left with is a center piece to cover your nose and mouth, and 4 strings to tie the mask together around your head. Once this is done, tie the mask around your head, readjusting the ties to get the perfect fit. And there you go! You’ve made your very own DIY fabric mask.

2. Style to Your Liking

This next part isn’t necessary, however, if you’d like to spice up your mask’s design, you can style it yourself. Again, similar to creating the mask, you can style a face mask in many different ways. However, the main thing you want to make sure of is to not choose any harmful materials. Remember, the mask is going to go over your nose and mouth and will be breathed in, therefore, you will want to refrain from using materials that may contain toxic or harsh chemicals. For instance, you may want to choose fabric crayons or markers, or perhaps natural tie dye. You’ll also want to make sure that whatever materials you choose can be washed. The last thing you’d want is for your mask to come out of the wash completely ruined. Keep in mind, DIY mask making is supposed to be fun, so feel free to make your mask as colorful or stylish as you’d like.
